Commercial Rates


The  Valuation  Office  is  the  State  property valuation  agency  responsible  for  the  valuation  of all  commercial  property  for  the  purposes  of  the levying of commercial rates by Local Authorities. Commercial rates are an annual charge on commercial property to pay for the general provision of services of Local Authorities.  Commercial rates are payable on commercial, industrial and some other non-domestic properties.  Local Authorities calculate commercial rates liabilities on the basis of valuations provided to them by the Valuation Office.

Calculating your 2020 Rates Liability

Your rates liability for 2020 will be calculated by multiplying the Valuation of the property by the “Annual Rate on Valuation” (ARV).  The valuation of the property is available on the Valuation Certificate issued by the Valuation Office. The Annual Rate on Valuation (ARV) was approved the Elected Members of Leitrim County Council at their Annual Budget meeting held on Monday 11th November, 2019.  The ARV for 2020 is .2208

The following formula is used to calculate your indicative Rates Liability for 2020.  

(Valuation of the property) x ARV = Rates Liability


Valuation of the Property:  (€5,900)

ARV:  (.2208)

€5,900  x .2208 = €1,302.72

In the example able the Rates Liability is €1302.77

Payment of Commercial Rates

Customers can avail of a number of payment options to discharge their commercial rates liability as follows: 

1.      At the Cash Desk, Aras an Chontae, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim

(Opening Hours Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.)  

2.      Posting your cheque, postal order, money order. Please ensure payments are made payable to "Leitrim County Council".

3.      Credit/Debit card payments: Can be accepted over the phone - please ring (071) 9620005, Ext. 400

4.      By Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to: Allied Irish Bank, Main Street, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Payment Plans

Leitrim County Council promotes the use of Payment Plans for commercial rate customers. A payment plan can be put in place in order to discharge your annual rates liability over the financial year.  You can choose to pay the regular instalments on a weekly/fortnightly/monthly basis directly from your Bank Account. If you wish to put a payment plan in place, please arrange to contact your Rates Account Manager.

Amendment to Vacancy Write Off Scheme 2019 & 2020

The 2019 Budget provided for an amendment to the Vacancy Write Off Scheme, whereby Leitrim County Council will grant a maximum write off equivalent to 75% of commercial rates invoiced during 2019. In this regard, with effect from 1st January, 2019 vacant properties will no longer be eligible for a 100% Vacancy Write Off. The maximum Vacancy Write Off that can be considered (subject to the standard conditions of the scheme being in place) is 75% write off of the total Rate Demand for the property for 2019. The Elected Members of Leitrim County Council agreed to maintain the maximum Vacancy Write Off that can be considered (subject to the standard conditions of the scheme being in place) is 75% write off of the total Rate Demand for the property for 2020.

Completed application forms together with all of the relevant supporting documentation should be returned to your Account Manager, Finance Department, Leitrim County Council.
