Anti Dumping Initiative Regional Awareness Campaign - 2019

Regional Anti-Dumping Awareness Campaign for the Connacht Ulster Region

Press Release

Issued: August 2019

It’s Not In our Nature – Is it in Yours? Let’s tackle illegal dumping!

The 2019 ‘It's Not in Our Nature – is it in Yours?’ campaign to highlight issues around illegal dumping throughout the Connacht Ulster Waste Region continues to operate and is working very well.  This project is being run by Leitrim County Council with support from the Connacht Ulster Waste Region Enforcement and Planning offices, the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and stakeholders across the region.

A wide range of clean-up projects are taking place throughout the summer. Leitrim County Council was allocated €61,000 for clean-ups and related activities from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment.

The aim of this campaign launched earlier this summer is to eradicate illegal dumping by providing funding which has developed an integrated and effective approach between Local Authorities, communities and other state agencies.

Sean Scott, Regional Waste Enforcement Coordinator said “We are pleased with progress to date, significant quantities of illegally dumped material has been collected and disposed of in addition to deterrents such as the installation of covert surveillance in specific locations throughout the region”, said Mr. Scott.

Members of the public are encouraged to report sightings of illegally dumped material to assist with prevention and enforcement. This can be done through the Environmental Protection Agency’s See It Say It app or by contacting your Local Authority by Phone: 1890 205 205  Email: environment@leitrimcoco.ie

People who themselves dump or pass on waste to an unauthorised waste collector can be prosecuted. Before hiring or paying for rubbish removal, it is important that the householder/holder of waste verify that their waste is being disposed of responsibly by a permitted service provider.  The householder/holder of waste can request to see certification from the waste collector and the permit number should be visible on their vehicle. If a householder’s waste is recovered and identified by Enforcement Officers, they may be fined up to a maximum €5,000 penalty.  Hiring an unlicensed waste service is now a criminal offence.
